Atlanta Has a Famous Baseball Tree
Babe Ruth and Eddie Mathews are part of a ballpark and a tree’s deep baseball history. All by a Whole Foods loading dock.
As a native Atlantan and baseball fan, I’m ashamed of the fact that this story is a discovery of mine. I should have known. In short, Babe Ruth and Eddie Mathews are the only players to ever hit a home run into a famous magnolia tree which sat in the outfield, in-play, at a ballpark in Atlanta. The tree still stands, though the park does not. The discovery of this fact was both happenstance and rewarding.
On a recent Friday evening, my son and I ate dinner at Manuel’s Tavern, a decently famous place in Atlanta, known for its historical ties. The walls at Manuel’s are adorned with all things Atlanta history, from MLK to Hank Aaron. Near our … Read More »
Support Team Glavine
Yes, Tom Glavine is on Twitter (@Tom_Glavine). But he’s using it primarily for charity work.
Now through July 15, 2012, visit Club Diamond Nation’s website and vote for the site’s stars. The star that receives the most fan support will win $15,000 for his or her selected charity, while the other four charities will each receive a $2,500 donation.
By voting for Tom Glavine and joining his team, you are helping him in his race to support CURE Childhood Cancer. In addition, you are simultaneously entering for a chance to win a training session with the star–a one-on-one pitching session for your kid or you.
Other stars involved are Barry Larkin, Jennie Flinch, Kevin Long and Jack Cust Jr. Currently, Finch is in the lead and Glavine is in third place. From his tweet after Tuesday’s All Star Game:
“Right now I’m in third … Read More »
Win a Simmons Card on Twitter
Update: Winners have been picked and notified via Twitter. Look for another giveaway soon.
There are thousands of Andrelton Simmons cards in the world. Problem is, most of them are in the hands of non-Braves fans.
This is meant to correct that.
Simmons appears in the 2012 Bowman card set. The same set that has some really valuable Bryce Harper and other rookie cards in it. So there are people out there buying the cards by the box or case, ripping them open just for the $$. What happens to the “worthless” cards? Well, they get set aside in boxes, ignored. In some cases, the people sell players by the “lot.” I found some of these lots of Simmons’ card for sale. They came from people in Wisconsin, Ohio, Indiana, Oklahoma. I want them in the hands of true Braves fans.
So, I’m giving … Read More »

Fresh baseball art: off-field injuries
I ran across this great designer site today. They letterpress small cards with interesting baseball factoids and make them look pretty cool, too. My favorite are the off-field injury cards, like Glen Allen Hill, who crashed into a glass table after dreaming he was covered in spiders or John Smoltz scalding himself while ironing a shirt he was wearing.
Check them out.
